With only one month left to register to vote in the Brussels local elections, we would like to take the opportunity to remind all EU mobile citizens residing in how and why they should vote in October 2018.
Under the FAIREU project (an EU project coordinated by ECAS in partnership with MPG, EUI, ALDA, and Malmo University) the Migration Policy Group have been coordinating the VoteBrussels campaign, aimed at encouraging EU and non-EU mobile citizens to register to vote. They have delivered presentations in a number of public indoor and outdoor events in Brussels, identifying good voting practices, and explaining how and why EU and non-EU citizens should vote in their local commune.
How to vote?
– Citizens must make sure you are in the electoral lists of your commune.
– If they are not in the lists then please submit a request to be included in the lists, by 31st July at the latest
– They must sign up to vote before 31st July by downloading this form (this only takes a couple of minutes)
– They are required to fill out the document and hand it over to their municipal office, or to one of the VoteBrussels volunteers (see next week’s event schedule below)
EU citizens must:
– Be at least 18 years old by the 14th of October 2018.
– Be registered in the electoral lists of his or her commune.
Non-EU citizens must:
– Be a resident in Belgium for at least 5 years.
– Comply with the same criteria as for EU citizens.
