NEXUS

Promoting the nexus of migrants through active citizenship (NEXUS)

The NEXUS project aims to empower students (with special attention to newly arrived migrant students and under-served students) so that they can enjoy their rights, uphold human rights values, and contribute positively to their society and the global community. NEXUS examines the role that Higher Education Institutions play in promoting civic and social responsibility of students, with an emphasis on including migrant students in such initiatives.

  • What does ECAS do?

The main innovation of NEXUS is the design, development and implementation of an integrated approach to civic education and community engagement – aimed at empowering newly arrived migrant students to take an active role in the society. The project will include the development of trainings, guides and handbooks, and an inventory of digital tools for civic education.

The objective of the NEXUS project is to allow the development of skills and dispositions in order to become informed citizens. At the same time, it opens the discussion about the barriers to civic and social engagement of newly arrived migrants.

NEXUS combines unique expertise (academia – policy/research – design and delivery of services) at EU level and offers specific local, regional and national focus and networks. This project is implemented in partnership with the following organisations:

Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Spain

Unione delle Università del Mediterraneo (UNIMED), Italy

Malmö University, Sweden

Knowledge Innovation Centre (KIC) Malta

Institut za razvoj obrazovanja (IRO), Slovenia

Apis Institute, Croatia

September 2019 – August 2022

ECAS will contribute to the NEXUS project mainly by building on its expertise in digital democracy and online participation.

ECAS will co-lead IO3 together with KIC. ECAS will be in charge of providing content for the civic tech toolbox, testing all existing resources and finding the most suited ones to assist migrant students in their civic and social participation through digital tools.
