The right to free movement is one of the most cherished rights of EU citizens. Together with the right to political participation they constitute the main building blocks of EU citizenship.
In 2017, the European Union counted more than 16 million EU citizens who moved to another Member State to seek work, study or retire. Those mobile EU citizens have also political rights, such as right to participate in local and European elections. Yet, their involvement in the political life of their host countries remains very limited and their potential to contribute to local political life and society is not fully realized.
This workshop will answer these questions by presenting the initial findings of the FAIR EU project. Ahead of the European elections 2019, the speakers will propose solutions to the main obstacles faced by EU citizens and elaborate recommendations on improving political participation of EU mobile citizens.
