Fostering Awareness, Inclusion and Recognition of EU Mobile Citizens’ Political Rights Workshop

February 19, 2019 @ 12:30 - 14:30

The right to free movement is one of the most cherished rights of EU citizens. Together with the right to political participation they constitute the main building blocks of EU citizenship.

In 2017, the European Union counted more than 16 million EU citizens who moved to another Member State to seek work, study or retire. Those mobile EU citizens have also political rights, such as right to participate in local and European elections. Yet, their involvement in the political life of their host countries remains very limited and their potential to contribute to local political life and society is not fully realized.

  • What are the reasons behind limited political participation of EU mobile citizens?
  • What problems do EU citizens face when moving to or residing in another EU Member State?
  • What obstacles to political participation do they experience?
  • What can be done to improve political involvement of EU mobile citizens?

This workshop will answer these questions by presenting the initial findings of the FAIR EU project. Ahead of the European elections 2019, the speakers will propose solutions to the main obstacles faced by EU citizens and elaborate recommendations on improving political participation of EU mobile citizens.
