Electoral rights of EU mobile citizens facing homelessness

27 June 2024
EU citizenship grants political rights to its citizens of voting age, such as the right to vote and stand as a candidate in the municipal or European elections in their country of residence.

Although this right is crucial for EU mobile citizens who reside in another EU country, recurring obstacles remain in the way and prevent EU mobile citizens from fully enjoying their political rights, especially those belonging to more vulnerable groups.

In this article, titled “Electoral rights of EU mobile citizens facing homelessness”, and featured in the latest issue of the FEANTSA Homeless in Europe Magazine, we presented the reasons why hurdles such as administrative burden or language should be lifted to ensure that all EU mobile citizens are engaged in the democratic process. Recommendations are suggested to raise awareness of political rights and support more vulnerable groups to ensure that they receive adequate support to make use of their voting rights.
