Project Launch
We are proud to announce that we are a project partner in a new EU project called MediaResilience: Nurturing Quality News Journalism.
The project aims to strengthen a free, diverse, and pluralistic news media landscape and promote quality journalism, emphasising quality media outreach to the most vulnerable groups in society susceptible to disinformation.
MediaResilience focuses on the following EU countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, and Slovenia. These countries have been threatened by multiple vulnerabilities related to media freedom, the quality of democracy, and potential resilience to disinformation.
Media plays a crucial role in sustaining European democracies and upholding the rule of law, which is vital for ensuring media freedom and pluralism. However, numerous challenges have seriously affected the media sector over the past decade, from significant economic downturns to the negative impacts of social media and political or other pressures.
To bolster the resilience, pluralism, and editorial independence of media sectors at the most vulnerable European level— with a particular focus on Eastern and Central European countries—this project will enhance financial resilience, address emerging technological challenges, promote high-quality journalism and support capacity-building by offering media and digital literacy initiatives that will enhance the ability of all stakeholders to recognise, refute, and debunk false and misleading information.
This way, our project seeks to empower pivotal actors in the project regions to advocate for more media freedom and pluralism throughout the EU.
“We are excited to announce that our initiative will provide direct support to approximately 30 independent news media organisations, each receiving up to 60,000 euros. We are committed to allocating at least 10% of the budget for re-granting to support investigative journalism and at least 30% to local and community media that address critical democratic issues. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering independent media and enhancing democratic discourse”, said Georgi Stoytchev, Executive director of Open Society Institute – Sofia.
MediaResilience is led by the Open Society Institute – Sofia (OSIS) and implemented with the support of the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) and ProMedia.
The Creative Europe Programme (CREA) (Grant Number 101180135) funds the project, which started on 1 October 2024 and will be completed on 30 September 2026.
